About Us

The Society of the Friends of Mount Athos (FoMA) is dedicated to the study and promotion of the history, culture, arts, architecture, natural history, and literature of the Orthodox monasteries of Mount Athos. It also seeks to promote the religious and other charitable work of the Holy Community and the monasteries, both those located on Mount Athos, and those elsewhere which are dependent or connected in some way with Mount Athos. FoMA also acts as a group of friends and supporters of Mount Athos. In consultation with the monastic authorities, we aim to provide them with assistance where it is practicable and needed.

MOUNTAIN STORIES

On the trail between earth and heaven …we never hike alone!

FoMA member, Spiro Deligiannis (pictured third from the left), joined the September 2025 footpath pilgrimage to Mount Athos and gives an insight in to his experience.

The numbers provide an impressive snapshot: a seven-day walking pilgrimage on the Holy Mountain, nine participants from six countries, 15 monasteries and three sketes visited, dozens of paths recce’d, scores of kilometers hiked, etc.  Yet the numbers fall far short of conveying the magnitude of experiencing Mt. Athos for a week (where each day seems like a week’s worth of activities), the depth of conversations carried on with monks, as well as enumerating the countless blessings received.
